About
Learn about Robert Phoenix and the Pennsylvania German Powwow tradition he carries forward.
Powwow — also called Braucherei — is a tradition of Christian folk healing native to the Pennsylvania Germans. Through prayer, the laying on of hands, herbal remedies, and spoken charms drawn from Scripture, the Powwower acts as an intermediary between the person in need and God, seeking healing for both man and beast. It is not a performance and not a superstition; it is a way of life rooted in faith, the land, and the words handed down through generations.
Robert Phoenix is the creator of this site and a practitioner of Traditional Christian Pennsylvania German Powwow. Here you will find his personal story — how he came to the tradition, what he believes, and the published works that have grown from more than two decades of research and practice. Powwow is his lifestyle, and this section is where he introduces himself to those who want to know the person behind the work.
A Note on This Site
Every word, charm, and photograph here has been the work of Robert Phoenix, gathered over more than two decades. Robert has left the site in the care of Arthur Vanderbilt, a student of his. Robert continues his practice in his community, and continues to teach. Arthur is the steward of this site. He answers inquiries and is dedicated to carrying the work forward, keeping this record of the tradition alive and sharing knowledge of Powwow as Robert did.
